"It's the most wonderful time of the year" Andy Williams belts out on the radio on the drive home from a busy day of shooting. The frost twinkles in the street lights and the cold breath of people walking the streets surrounds them like a fog cloud.
It's a magical season...but as busy business owners, do we really take it all in? Or does the whole festive period flash by us as fast as Jimbobs outdoor Christmas lights from across the road?
It is important for business owners to take a break and try to relax during the holiday season. Yes, we are maxed out to our fullest capacities as everyone rushes to use our services or buy our products in time for "the big day" or "the end of the year" but for the benefit of everyone just pause for a minute and take it all in.
So here are some tips to help you chill to the max this December:
1. Plan Ahead:
Anticipate the holiday rush and plan your work accordingly to avoid last-minute stress.
At the end of each working day, I like to write a list of what needs to be done the next day. That way it helps me get started straight away without dilly-dallying about what needs to be done. I find it helps me relax better in the evening knowing the next day is organised.
Set realistic goals for this month so that you can manage your workload effectively.
Know what you can do and what you can't do. Don't take on too many clients if you know you are going to struggle to fit them in...even if you are a people pleaser. They won't be pleased if you fit them into your overly busy schedule and their treatment or service isn't up to your usual scratch.
2. Delegate Responsibilities:
If you can...delegate, delegate, delegate. It doesn't mean that you are a failure if you ask for help. It just makes it better for everyone!
3. Set Boundaries:
Clearly communicate your availability during the festive season. Set boundaries for when you will be offline and STICK TO THEM!!!
Use email autoresponders or communication tools to inform clients and colleagues about your limited availability.
4. Prioritize Self-Care:
Take care of your physical and mental well-being. Get enough sleep, eat healthily (but still enjoy the mince pies!), and engage in activities that bring you joy.
Meditation and deep breathing techniques really help you to take a minute to absorb what's going on.
5. Unplug and Engage in Festive Activities:
Unplug in your out-of-office hours and spend time with your friends and family.
Enjoy the children and the excitement they share.
Be there for them. Be present.
6. Plan for the New Year:
Use this time to reflect on the past year and set goals for the upcoming year. Develop a strategic plan and outline priorities.
Having a clear vision for the future can help you enter the new year with a sense of purpose.
7. Stay Positive:
Embrace the Christmas spirit and focus on the positive aspects of your personal and professional life.
Remember that taking a break is not only beneficial for your well-being but can also lead to increased productivity and creativity when you return to work.
By taking these steps, you can create a more enjoyable and relaxing holiday season for yourself while ensuring that your business continues to run smoothly.
And make sure you turn your craziest time of the year into the most wonderful time of the year!
